How to use the 5 letter word finder
- Type any letters whose position you know into the five squares at the top. A blank square means "any letter".
- Under each square, add letters that belong in the word but not in that spot. One square can hold several letters.
- Use Contains these letters for letters that must appear somewhere, and Letters to exclude for letters you have ruled out.
- Narrow it further with Starts with or Ends with, then pick how the results are sorted.
Every box is optional and they all work together, so you can start broad and add one clue at a time. Press Clear all to begin a new search.
Five letter word search options
Find words by letter position
The position squares make this a 5 letter word finder by position: a letter in square two only matches words with that letter second. Two known letters, for example R second and N fourth, already cut the list to 63 words, such as BRAND, BRINE, BRING.
5 letter words with these letters
The contains box answers the question "which words use these letters?" It ignores order, so it also works as a 5 letter word unscramble: enter all five letters and you get every arrangement that is a real word. Repeat a letter to require it twice, as in EE for words like GEESE or SHEEP.
5 letter words starting with or ending in
Prefixes and suffixes are often the first thing you remember. Type one letter or several: starting with QU, ending in IGHT, or both at once. These boxes combine with the position squares, and the finder tells you when two clues contradict each other by returning no words.
Excluding letters
Letters you exclude never appear in the results. If you exclude a letter you also entered as known, the finder reads it the way word games do: the word has that letter only as many times as you specified, and no extra copies.

- Starts with SH and ends with ER: SHEER, SHIER, SHOER, SHYER.
- Contains AELST (an unscramble): 10 words, including LEAST, SLATE, STALE, STEAL, TALES, TESLA.
- Ends in IGHT: 12 words, from BIGHT and EIGHT to RIGHT and WIGHT.
About this 5 letter word list
The word list comes from ENABLE, a public-domain word list made for word games. It has 8,636 five-letter entries; we removed 18 slurs and strong profanities, which leaves 8,618. ENABLE includes plurals, verb forms and many uncommon words, so you will see entries like SHOER or STELA next to everyday words. It is not the answer list of any particular game, and a game may reject a word that appears here.
