About Word Puzzle Solver
Word Puzzle Solver is a small set of free tools for word puzzles. Each tool takes the letters you already know and searches a word list for every word that fits the rules of the puzzle. The tools are meant to help you get unstuck, check your own answers and learn new words. They do not show daily answers, hints or archives for any game.
What the tools do
- 5 Letter Words: Find five-letter words by known letters, position, start, end and letters to leave out.
- Wordle Solver: Type your guesses, set green, yellow and gray tiles, and see the words that are still possible.
- Spelling Bee Solver: Enter the seven letters and the center letter to list every word and the pangrams.
- Best Starting Words: Starting words ranked by letter frequency, plus vowel-heavy starters and 2- and 3-word openers.
- Squaredle Solver: Type a 3x3 to 5x5 letter grid and get every word you can trace through touching squares.
- Word Hunt Solver: Enter the 16 letters of a 4x4 Word Hunt board to see every word you can swipe, longest first.
- Letter Boxed Solver: Enter the twelve letters on the four sides to find valid words and one- or two-word solutions.
Word list and license
All tools use the ENABLE word list (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon), which is in the public domain. Our copy is the enable1.txt file from the dolph/dictionary repository, downloaded from https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dolph/dictionary/master/enable1.txt and checked before use: every line had to be a lowercase word made of the letters a to z, with no duplicates. The file has 172,823 words and the SHA-256 checksum 3f16130220645692ed49c7134e24a18504c2ca55b3c012f7290e3e77c63b1a89.
We removed 93 words from it: ethnic, racial, homophobic and ableist slurs, plus the strongest profanity. The list of removed words is kept in our source code and matched exactly, so ordinary words that only sometimes appear in insults stay in. That leaves 172,730 words, including 8,618 five-letter and 15,216 six-letter words. Every count on this site, such as the number of five-letter words or the starting-word rankings, is calculated from this filtered list.
ENABLE is a broad list built for word games. It contains plurals, verb forms and many rare words, and it is not the word list used by any of the puzzles named on this site, so a game may reject a word we list or accept one we do not.
Privacy
The solvers run entirely in your browser. The letters, guesses and grids you enter are never sent to our server or anyone else. The only download a solver makes is the word list itself, a 1.7 MB text file served from this site the first time you run a search. Ads are provided by Google AdSense; see the privacy policy for details on cookies and advertising.
Trademarks
This site is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by The New York Times Company, GamePigeon or Squaredle. Wordle, Spelling Bee and Letter Boxed are trademarks of The New York Times Company. Word Hunt is a game in GamePigeon, and the Squaredle name belongs to its owner. These names are used only to describe which puzzle each tool helps with.
